Hello! I am Shannon Murphy, teacher of English IV and AP Literature & Composition at Sugar Creek Charter High School. I am a graduate of East Carolina University with a double Bachelor's Degree in English and Secondary English Education, and a Master's Degree in Multicultural/Transnational Literature. I am certified to teach English as a second language, and three out of my eight years teaching were spent in Busan, South Korea. I am a lover of reading and writing, and I'm excited to share my passion with you all.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

English IV & Honors English IV

Prerequisite: English III

Students will study literature, historical documents, informational texts, poetry, drama, biographical works, U.S. documents “of historical and literary significance,” a Shakespearean play, and art from Great Britain and Europe to better gain a basic understanding of the influence of Great Britain’s history on world literature and culture. They will master the complex literacy skills necessary to gather and evaluate information into various kinds of original writing. By the end of English IV, students are expected to read and understand increasingly complex texts at the upper end of the twelfth grade reading range. Students are required to take the North Carolina Final Exam for English IV.

AP Literature & Composition

Prerequisite: 85% or higher in English III

AP English Literature and Composition engages students in the careful reading and critical analysis of fiction, drama, and poetry. Through the close reading of selected texts, students consider a work’s structure, style, and themes as well as elements such as figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. This course includes intensive study of representative works from various genres and periods, ranging from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century, concentrating on works of recognized literary merit. Reading is accompanied by thoughtful discussion and analytical writing about the works. Students will take the College Board AP exam at the end of the course to potentially earn college credit.
