Local Wellness Policy

STUDENT WELLNESS

Sugar Creek Charter School is committed to fostering environments that promote and protect children’s health and well-being, reduce childhood obesity, and enhance students’ ability to learn by supporting healthy eating, physical activity, and the development of lifelong wellness practices.

All students at Sugar Creek Charter School will have the opportunity, support, and encouragement to be physically active on a regular basis. We comply with the North Carolina Board of Education policy HSP-S-000, requiring a minimum of 60 minutes of physical activity per week for all students in grades K-5.

We will continue to provide nutrition education to foster lifelong habits of healthy eating. Students will be encouraged to participate in physical education classes that meet North Carolina Instructional Standards. Students will not be denied participation in recess or other physical activity as a form of discipline.

STUDENT NUTRITION

Sugar Creek Charter School will provide nutritious meals through participation in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. To achieve our nutrition goals, we will:

  • Comply with all applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Provide nutritious breakfast and lunch to all students, free of charge.
  • Encourage student participation in the School Nutrition Program while protecting the identity of students receiving free and reduced-priced meals.
  • Ensure meals meet USDA menu planning guidelines, with a focus on fresh and healthy ingredients.
  • Post monthly menus on the school website and make them accessible to parents.
  • Maintain a clean and safe meal environment, with adequate time for students to eat.
  • Restrict access to vending machines for students and prevent access to competitive foods during the operation of the Child Nutrition Program.
  • Ensure outside foods served at events and parties are factory-wrapped to address safety and allergy concerns.
  • Promote healthy snacks brought in by students and parents for snacks and parties.

GOALS FOR WELLNESS PROMOTION

Sugar Creek Charter School will promote student health and well-being through the following goals:

  1. Nutrition Education: Provide comprehensive nutrition education that promotes balanced meals and healthy eating habits.
  2. Nutrition Promotion: Reinforce healthy eating by promoting participation in school meals and working with community partners to ensure consistent access to nutritious food.
  3. Physical Activity: Encourage physical activity by providing daily recess and opportunities for students to be active during and after school hours.
  4. Wellness Promotion: Promote overall student wellness, including mental health and well-being, through the development of a comprehensive student wellness policy.
